Drawing inspiration from a beautiful faux stained glass piece....

Picture

The image on the left is beautiful gallery glass artwork by Lucy Shear that came across my newsfeed this morning.

She's inspired me to try adapting my zentangle designs into a faux stained glass artwork. The image on the right is the design I am creating. After I finish drawing it I will outline it with liquid lead onto an 8 x 10 acrylic sheet. There's going to be a lot of lead outlining to get done before I can start painting but I'm excited to see how this works. I'm feeling that this piece will be done in shades of blue and green. I'll be using translucent paints so when this finished piece is displayed in a window it will be just beautiful! I've also decided I should get some of the Gallery Glass gold leading because look how beautiful it is in Lucy's piece!

From a wine stain disaster to a fun top....

Picture

And it's done! Really happy with how I was able to save this top. It certainly creates a lot of conversation when I wear it when I'm out and about.

I get a lot of inspiration from other artists who share their talents on social media. The idea for this project is no exception. This was inspired by a video by @watercolorsonweehours

Turning a problem into a work of art....

Picture

If you get a stain on it, turn it into a piece of art! Just get creative and paint over it. I thought I was done but once I sat back and looked at it, I decided I need to add a little bit more to this. I'm working on more purple flowers in the middle right now. Then I think I'm going to put maybe a butterfly on the upper area or some bumblebees. But overall I'm pretty happy with the way this is looking.

When all else fails, paint it....

Picture

I have this denim shirt that I quite like but unfortunately it got red wine spilled on it. Even though I washed it right away and most of the stain came out there was still a mark that could be seen. But being me ever so resourceful I came up with an idea.

Before giving up on it completely I thought this would be a good piece to practice on and just see if I can salvage it by painting some flowers on it. I'm just beginning to lay out my design. I'm using my markers to do the outlining so I know which colors I want to use where. Once it's all drawn out I will apply some acrylic paint. Let's see what happens.

Sketching buildings....

Picture
Continuing to practice my sketching. Seems I'm drawn to sketching buildings. For now I'm practicing with pictures I'm finding on Pixabay. I like putting the original picture with my attempts because it really helps me to see where I need more improvement. In the moment of doing the drawing I don't always see the issues but afterwards I can reflect on it and see where I need to improve things. I'm thinking at some point I would like to take my finished picture, like this one, and seeing what I see needs to be improved, use this picture as a reference to draw the same thing again. It would be interesting to see if I'm able to do a better rendition of it the second time around. But that will be down the road sometime when I find I'm wanting to do art but not feeling inspired by anything.

Perhaps eventually I'll be able to take a sketch pad around the village and sit and draw what I see. That's the whole reason I'm working on improving my skill because I would love to create some sketched greeting cards of our village.

From greeting card to framed artwork....

Picture
My friend took some of my sea glass cards home and put them in these frames. This has turned simple greeting cards into lovely works of art to display in her home. It always gives me such joy to see people enjoying my art.

Using color to enhance negative space....

Today's lesson was about learning and understanding the use of negative space. It teaches me to understand how the picture can look different depending on what I'm using the color to put emphasis on.

Loosen up baby....

Picture

Still practicing my sketching. The drawing is very loose and very undetailed because I'm learning to let go. As I get more comfortable with sketching maybe I'll get a little more detailed with my buildings but for now just a rudimentary church and the impression of trees is what I was going for. It's so hard for me just to let go that I'm going to the extreme for now and I will rein it in as I get more comfortable with sketching.

Practicing my sketching....

Picture
Back to practicing my sketching with @Tobysketchloose also known as @TobyUrbansketch. I'm following one of his free online courses just to help me loosen up and learn how to sketch. I do a lot of different art but sketching hasn't been one of them so far. I want to learn so that if I'm out and about and I have a little sketch pad with me I can just quickly sketch what I see. This isn't something that I've tried before and it's something that I didn't think I could do so I am now learning to do it. It's really a matter of training the eye to look at things differently and training the brain to see it differently.

I was reading something another artist wrote and he said that if you turn the picture you want to draw upside down, let's say a shoe for example, then your brain, instead of seeing a shoe, will see the angles and lines involved in the shoe. Apparently this trains your brain to see things not as their actual thing but as the parts that makes up the thing.

Purple shells on the beach....

Picture

It's hard to tell in this picture but this big shell has some lovely purple colors in it. Every so often, if I'm really lucky, I come across a shell with some very distinctive colors in them. I've added what I call coconut "nuts" to this piece - they are these little round nuts that have the three holes in the end of them, almost makes me think of a face.

Who knew there was an artist lurking within? Certainly not me.

It started with my Mom giving me some paints that she wasn’t using but I never did anything with them because “I wasn’t artistic” - according to myself. We really need to learn to have a kinder inner voice because I have discovered that apparently I am artistic.

In early 2018 I was introduced to an artist on Instagram from Australia who makes the most beautiful art. I looked at it and was truly inspired. I thought how hard can it be to put dots on some rocks. I had never felt that I was artistic at all but this woman has changed me forever! So I began and since that time I have started following even more rock artists to inspire me.

In late 2019 my sister in law introduced me to another Instagram person who creates coloring books. Drawing is another thing I said I could never do but thanks to the inspiration I am receiving from this woman and through various social media sources I have discovered that I actually can draw.

So the lesson is....you never really know what you are capable of until you actually try it! Never say never, I can’t etc. to yourself. Obviously I have to change my words and thoughts from - "I'm not artistic" and "I can't draw" to.....
"Cool something new! Let's give it a try and see where it goes!" And now when people ask me what I do I say - I am an Artist!

I look forward to expanding my creativity. Thank you for your interest and support.
