Friends make everything better....

Picture

Friends come in many shapes and sizes but the most important thing is their loyalty and devotion to us. I've been having lots of fun with these new designs. It's kind of tricky to find the right shapes for the dogs but I lucked out with these ones. Sometimes I'll have to use pieces that will cause us to think a little outside the box to see the dogs but hopefully I will still find enough pieces to continue to make these fun cards.

Happiness is…. people supporting artists!

Picture
I’ve been making a lot of sea glass trees, bowls and cards lately. No surprise that my supply of glass has been GREATLY diminished.

I cut the tops off of 2 liter pop bottles to sort and store my glass in. At one point I had 12 of these containers with various colors of glass and now I’m down to 5 partial containers with the colors I find – dark green, light green, white/clear, brown and blue.

I decided to take the advice that I always gave to my kids as they were growing up, and that was to ask for what you want or need – the worse that can happen is being told NO – but what if you got a YES. You’ll never know if you don’t ask.

I put a container at my market display with a sign that said Sea Glass Donations Gratefully Accepted.

I’d like to thank the people who stopped by and gave me sea glass. My containers are beginning to fill up again – so thank you for supporting my art through your donations.

Girlfriends make things better....

I'm loving these new designs. Now I have to keep a sharp eye open when I'm beach walking so I can find more "dresses".

Best friends....

I just started figuring out this new design. I'll have a few available and see how they are received.

Fun new card design....

I saw this idea online for using cork as posts in beach scenes so I figured it's a great way to recycle the corks I have. I used pencil crayons and pastels to spice up the backgrounds on these cards. Seems I'm into birds, crabs and fishermen today.

Cone shaped trees....

Picture
Picture
I have a new idea in my head. It may be a complete disaster but I'm going to try it. I had to come up with this idea for making trees because I'm running out of the sizes needed and enough glass to continue to make my "stacked" trees. The idea is to lay sea glass out on plastic wrap on top of this shape that I cut out of a piece of paper. Once I have all the pieces laid out I will cover it completely with white glue and let it dry. While it's still a little flexible I fold it and place it over a cardboard cone shape to give it stability while drying. I add another coating of white glue to make it firmer and multiple layers of glue on the seam to seal it.

The thing I've come up with so far is that I can't overlap the glass because it'll just wreck the whole design when I try to wrap it into a cone shape. I'm going to lie one flat layer down side by side and then after I get it in a cone shape maybe I'll apply more layers. I'm not sure yet we'll see how it goes.

I'm enjoying this process - it's like working on a jigsaw puzzle.
I'm pretty happy with these trees although I do refer to them as "Charlie Brown trees" because they're a little bit wonky,  (just the maker my husband says in the background as I'm typing this) especially the ones in the top picture as they were my first attempts. They are fun and quite different from the ones I was making previously. They take a lot less time and glass and still look really pretty with lights inside.

You can get quite a different result depending what type of light is inside. In the picture above the "green tree" has mini green lights inside while the 2 beside it have LED tea lights.

The tree shown in the pictures below are the same trees but t
he left picture shows them with an LED tea light inside of it. The right has mini lights (some call them twinkle lights or fairy lights).

Time for a new style....

I'm running out of the proper shapes of glass for my regular Christmas trees so I'm trying another style that I had seen online somewhere. It is a much simpler design to create - we'll see how it turns out.

I'm trying to figure out how to build this Christmas tree design. I put the first layer around the bottom no problem but I think I have to lie it flat and do one side at a time because otherwise while the glue is wet the glass pieces will just slide down. I had to put it in a bed of rice so that I can make it lay level because it's a tapered candle that I'm working around. I'm looking at the second picture and I see sort of a Mr. Potato Head face on it with all the tiles holding pieces in place. LOL

This style is a slow process because of course the glue slides while its wet so I have to place just a few pieces and then use pieces of tile to brace the glass pieces in place until it dries. Then I can turn it to work on the next section. Definitely a slow process but I can see that it is starting to come together and might be interesting when it's finished. I tried this style of Christmas tree to use up some of my bigger pieces. I had enough bigger pieces to make two of these. l have to wait to see the final results to decide if I want to create more of this type.

So after completing two of these trees I have decided that I will not make more. Firstly because I don't have enough bigger pieces to make another one but most importantly because I really didn't enjoy the creative process involved. This was more of a chore than an enjoyment and my motto is - if it's not fun don't do it. So I will listen to my own advice, until such time as I discover simpler way to create this type of tree.

My trees are growing....

Picture

I started working on these four trees on October 23rd. They’ve been slowly progressing along.  I think I will have the one in the front right finished today. It only needs maybe four more layers to it and then it should be done. The other ones have quite a few more layers yet to go but it’s all progressing. Some trees just grow faster than others LOL.

Who knew there was an artist lurking within? Certainly not me.

It started with my Mom giving me some paints that she wasn’t using but I never did anything with them because “I wasn’t artistic” - according to myself. We really need to learn to have a kinder inner voice because I have discovered that apparently I am artistic.

In early 2018 I was introduced to an artist on Instagram from Australia who makes the most beautiful art. I looked at it and was truly inspired. I thought how hard can it be to put dots on some rocks. I had never felt that I was artistic at all but this woman has changed me forever! So I began and since that time I have started following even more rock artists to inspire me.

In late 2019 my sister in law introduced me to another Instagram person who creates coloring books. Drawing is another thing I said I could never do but thanks to the inspiration I am receiving from this woman and through various social media sources I have discovered that I actually can draw.

So the lesson is....you never really know what you are capable of until you actually try it! Never say never, I can’t etc. to yourself. Obviously I have to change my words and thoughts from - "I'm not artistic" and "I can't draw" to.....
"Cool something new! Let's give it a try and see where it goes!" And now when people ask me what I do I say - I am an Artist!

I look forward to expanding my creativity. Thank you for your interest and support.
