Cats and dogs....

Picture
Here's a walkthrough of how I create these cute cards with dogs chasing cats up the trees. First thing I must do is find all my pieces.

In this case I had to go to the beach and look for more twigs that represent the trees. I needed to have like a Y shape to it so it looks like the cat has climbed the tree and is looking down on the dog that is anxious to play with it.

Then I have to sort through my glass and find the appropriate pieces for the heads, bodies, ears and tails if possible. Sometimes I can't find the appropriate pieces so I will draw, for example, the cat ears. In most cases I tend to be pretty successful in finding the right shapes; it just takes a lot of patience to sort and sort and sort. At times I have to walk away from it because I'm at a standstill and can’t find the pieces I'm looking for. Then I turn back to it a few minutes later and there it is right in front of me, the piece I wanted. So sometimes I have to take a break and give my eyes a rest then go back with a different mindset. Maybe stop looking for ears and start looking for heads and all the sudden I find the ears that I was looking for originally. Once I find all my pieces, I lay it out on the card to see how I want it to fit. With the cats I use a clear glass but clear on white paper doesn't really show well so on the backside of the glass I will apply some stripes of color with my markers. My cats are usually orange tabby cats because it just shows up best in my mind. I draw the ears on the cats because I don’t have small enough pieces for ears. Once I finished laying it out the way I want it to be, coloring my cats and allowing the color to dry a bit, which is an important step because if the marker color is still wet when I apply the glue the glue will absorb the color and create like a mark in the color section so the color section will not be consistent.

The next step is to add some color to the card itself. I feel these cards need a blue sky and some green grass so I pull out my pastels and set down a bit of color. Now I can start gluing things down. I paint on the eyes and the noses with acrylic paint just give a little more definition.

The final touch on all my pieces of art is to sign it. As my name is Cynthia which sometimes is quite long on a small piece of art, I sign all of my work with Cyn.

It's all about the girlfriends....

Picture

Girlfriends are an integral part of our lives. Do you agree? They give us balance when we need it and support in our problems and our antics! Let's celebrate all the special women in our lives! Cheers! Here's to you Girlfriend!

Today I was making some cards to tell that girlfriend just how important she is to you.

Bringing my latest idea to life....

Picture
I wanted to incorporate the seashells I have with my idea of creating Christmas trees. I took it one step further and used an idea that someone else was doing and I added sea glass to the seashell idea.

The tall tree on the left, although it looks pretty good in the picture, is actually quite misshapen on the other side, but for a first attempt it looks okay. This tree was made using my cone shape method. As shown on the right, first I found all the pieces I wanted to use and laid them out in the shape. Then I took each shell and had to find an appropriate piece of glass to go in the hole. I then glued the glass in and laid it back into position on the pattern, adding some glue to where the shells touch and continued until it was all filled with glass and back in place. Once it dried enough I wrapped it into the cone shape, added more glue to the shells, held it in place with a lot of painters tape and let it dry overnight. As I said earlier it's a wonky shape but I've learned a lot about this method and will probably try it again with my improvements to see how a second one will turn out.

The smaller tree, on the right in the picture above, was made with my stacked method. I used a different type of shell but one which also has a nature occurring hole in it. The first step with this method was to collect all the shells I wanted to use and find appropriate pieces of glass to glue into each hole. Once they had all dried I started building my stacked tree. This method is much easier than a cone tree but unfortunately finding enough similar shells in varying sizes will be a challenge. I really like this style and will make more of them with the shells I have. I think in the future I will only use dark green glass in the holes because as you can see from the picture on the right the light green just looks white when the light is shining through it.

I'm thinking that I will have to take another look at all the shells I have to see if there are more varieties or pieces that I can use to make trees. I might have a real "tree farm" available with many styles to choose from by the time next market season comes along.

Happy girl; doing some painting....

Picture
I really enjoy watercolor painting but with the demands on producing all the different sea glass creations that I make there just hasn't been time.

I'm finally in a place where I can take some time out and paint! Happy, happy! I went onto YouTube and looked up one of the people who inspire me, @DianneAntonStudios. Sure enough she had these tutorials on some cute little birds so away I went. Then from there I decided to go on to paint a couple flowers - they are a staple with me.

Unfortunately I only have regular card stock which really isn't what should be used for the wet on wet painting technique. Although the cards really soaked up the water I put on the paper I was able to apply more which the card really didn't like but I did manage to create these lovely cards. They were quite warped out of shape so after they initially dried I gave them a light water spray on the back side then pressed them between 2 sheets of cardboard with weight on top. I left that overnight and the cards are now nice and flat. LOL the things I go through for my art.

I decided that I want to paint on cards going forward so I can offer them at the market along side my sea glass cards. Maybe I can practice more using the wet on dry technique. I guess it's something I will have to experiment with but I REALLY like the wet on wet because of the freedom of the paint and it's ability to just go where it wants and create unique designs. I'm pretty sure I will be sourcing out watercolor paper invitation cards soon. Hopefully I'm successful and they don't cost me an arm and a leg.

Sea glass trees....

Picture
My sea glass trees are becoming quite popular. Living in a beach community makes them just right as a Christmas tree. I spent the past year working furiously to have enough trees for the 2024 high season but as fast as I worked was as fast as they were selling, even without a market display during the slow season. I made so many that I actually ran out of glass for making my stacked trees. I had to come up with a new idea which was the cone shaped trees and fortunately they were also well received.

Over the holidays I had some of the recipients send me photos of their trees all lit up for the season. I really love it when I see where my art ends up. Some times I get pictures of their trees all lit up but I've also had people send me pictures of the sea glass cards or wall art they have gotten from me and had framed.

I know I'm going to have to get busy and get started already for the 2025 season. I actually have a couple new ideas which I want to try as well. One idea is to make trees with these small oyster shells that I've been finding, although I don't have many shells yet, I think I will only have enough for one tree. I guess that will depend on how I build it. I haven't quite worked that out in my head yet. The other idea, and I got this from seeing the creations of the guy I got all the seashells from, is to use sea shells that have holes through them and there are a lot of them. The idea is to put a piece of sea glass in the hole and build it into a tree. Then when there are lights inside it will light up all the glass pieces. I can't wait to see how this idea will work out. But right now I will just think about it for a while as I'm currently focusing on replenishing my supply of sea glass greeting cards. Soon it will be tree building time once again.

Ballerinas were the word of the day....

Picture

I started adding seashells into my sea glass card designs. I recently made a card to create a ballerina and really liked the result. Today I decided to make some more as the first one was well received. Then just for fun I threw in one with bikinis on the beach.

Sea glass, seashells and ideas....

Picture

I often go online and look at posts from people I follow to get inspiration for my creations. Sometimes it's just a certain style or maybe a saying that leads to my creations. Other times just looking at other people's creations gets my head in the right mind set to come up with new ideas. Today I was inspired by @seaglasscreations who makes wonderful artworks using shells as skirts and hats. This hit just the right note with me seeing as how I now have hundreds of shells to work with. Special thanks to @seaglasscreations for setting me on my creative path today.

Nature inspired....

Picture

It was all about nature - from a goofy bird eyeballing a crab to jet skis on the surf and singing birds on a branch. That's where my creativity led me today.

Sometimes I'm just goofy....

Picture

Some days it's just a regular card making day, other days I get a little goofy. This time it was a mixture of both.

I have a problem....

Picture
But not all problems are bad ones. The problem is that my sea glass greeting cards are becoming more and more popular! That's definitely a good problem to have. The downside to it is I can't seem to get ahead of the game. I am currently down to 6 cards - that's unheard of for me! So I'm busy creating new cards daily just to try to keep stock at my Friday Market display. No sooner do I get a bunch made and they are gone again. We're in the middle of the busy season so I am busy, busy, busy creating.

I have people who love my work so they bring their friends over to see it and so of course this helps to introduce me to new people. I've had lots of people stopping by to tell me that they've taken the cards home and framed them; or they give them to friends back home who are just thrilled with my creations. I love hearing these stories!

About mid March things will start to slow down I stop doing the Friday Market. I will focus my summer, slow season, to creating a BIG supply of cards to hopefully keep me in better shape for next season. Since I now have an abundance of sea shells I'm going to start incorporating more shells with my sea glass creations. I will have to go surf the web for inspiring ideas.

At the same time I will have to replenish my sea glass Christmas tree supply as I sell out of them before Christmas each year. I have a few new tree ideas I want to try that will include making some with sea shells and making some with sea shells that have holes in them and I'm planning to put a piece of glass in the hole. Imagine how pretty that's going to look with lights inside it.

Who knew there was an artist lurking within? Certainly not me.

It started with my Mom giving me some paints that she wasn’t using but I never did anything with them because “I wasn’t artistic” - according to myself. We really need to learn to have a kinder inner voice because I have discovered that apparently I am artistic.

In early 2018 I was introduced to an artist on Instagram from Australia who makes the most beautiful art. I looked at it and was truly inspired. I thought how hard can it be to put dots on some rocks. I had never felt that I was artistic at all but this woman has changed me forever! So I began and since that time I have started following even more rock artists to inspire me.

In late 2019 my sister in law introduced me to another Instagram person who creates coloring books. Drawing is another thing I said I could never do but thanks to the inspiration I am receiving from this woman and through various social media sources I have discovered that I actually can draw.

So the lesson is....you never really know what you are capable of until you actually try it! Never say never, I can’t etc. to yourself. Obviously I have to change my words and thoughts from - "I'm not artistic" and "I can't draw" to.....
"Cool something new! Let's give it a try and see where it goes!" And now when people ask me what I do I say - I am an Artist!

I look forward to expanding my creativity. Thank you for your interest and support.
